Why Does Camping & Rafting Close During Monsoon?
The annual monsoon closure is mandated by the Uttarakhand Government, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and National Green Tribunal (NGT) for two vital reasons:
- Massive Water Discharge from Tehri Dam: Heavy rainfall in the upper Himalayas causes the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers to surge. Water flow exceeds safe rafting limits (over 30,000 cusecs), submerging sandy river beaches.
- Ecological Riverbed Regeneration: The temporary dismantling of seasonal tents allows the Himalayan riverbank ecosystem, flora, and migratory birds to recuperate naturally.
