Jim Corbett: The Wild Heart of Uttarakhand
Established in 1936 as Hailey National Park and later renamed in honor of legendary British-Indian naturalist and author Jim Corbett, this iconic sanctuary is the cradle of Project Tiger (inaugurated here in 1973). Sprawling over 1,288 square kilometers across the Shivalik foothills and Ramganga river basin, Corbett is celebrated worldwide for its dramatic landscapes of dense Sal forests, vast savannah grasslands (Chaurs), and crystal-clear mountain rivers.
Jim Corbett is home to the highest density of Royal Bengal Tigers in the world, alongside over 1,000 wild Asiatic elephants, leopards, sloth bears, sambar deer, gharial crocodiles, and more than 600 species of resident and migratory birds.
