Nainital: The Sacred Eye of the Himalayas
Nestled in a picturesque valley cradled by seven verdant hills known as Sapta Shring (Ayarpata, Deopata, Handi-Bandi, Cheena Peak, Alma, Lariya-Kanta, and Sher-ka-Danda), Nainital (2,084m / 6,837 ft) is Northern India's most celebrated lake resort.
According to the ancient Shiva Purana, when Lord Shiva performed the celestial Tandava dance carrying the charred body of Goddess Sati, her left eye (Naina) fell at this exact location, creating the emerald, eye-shaped natural mountain lake and sanctifying the revered Maa Naina Devi Temple situated at the northern bank (Mallital).
"Discovered" by British sugar merchant P. Barron in 1841, Nainital quickly transformed into the summer capital of the United Provinces. Today, it combines historic colonial estates, bustling markets along the scenic Mall Road, vibrant Tibetan bazaars, and high-altitude biodiversity with world-class boating and cable car experiences.
