Expedition Summary

The Crown Jewel of Himalayan White Water Rafting

Roughly 36 kilometers of pure river separates Kaudiyala from Rishikesh, and you'll cover all of it on the water. Your day begins up at Kaudiyala, a mountain village sitting about 480m above sea level, and ends down at NIM Beach. This stretch, in my experience, tops anything else commercially rafted in India.

What hits you first at Kaudiyala is raw volume. The river swells enormous here. You plunge through deep Himalayan canyons, granite cliffs dropping vertical on either side, white sand bars flashing past. Thirteen named rapids line the route, and they range from Class II all the way to Class IV+. You'll meet standing waves tall enough to block your view, boulder gardens that demand constant maneuvering, and that legend everyone talks about, The Wall.

Rescue Kayak Escort
Mandatory solo safety kayakers lead and trail the raft through all major class IV rapids.
Cliff Jump Included
Experience 25-foot cliff jumping and body surfing in calm turquoise river pools.

The 3 Sequential River Sectors (36 KM)

The 36 KM Kaudiyala run stitches all three official Ganges whitewater sectors into one trip.

Sector 1 • 10 KM

Kaudiyala to Marine Drive

Extreme whitewater territory, and home to The Wall at Grade IV+ along with Daniel's Dip at III+. Paddling has to stay synced, and guides scout the lines from the bank before you commit.

Grade IV+ Extreme
Sector 2 • 10 KM

Marine Drive to Shivpuri

A deep canyon stretch holding Three Blind Mice at Grade III, Cross Fire at III, and Black Money. Wave trains run nonstop here and keep your arms burning.

Grade III+ Exciting
Sector 3 • 16 KM

Shivpuri to Rishikesh (NIM Beach)

Then comes the famous 16 KM finale: Roller Coaster at III+, Golf Course at III+, Clubhouse, Cash Flow, Initiation, plus the 25 foot cliff jump if you've got the nerve.

13 Technical Rapids You Will Encounter

Every rapid on this stretch gets classified by international standards, judged on water volume, gradient drop, and hydraulic punch.

1. The Wall

Grade IV+

The Wall. The big one in Rishikesh. A vertical ledge drops away, a churning hole opens up massive and hungry, and backwash spins hard behind it. No one runs it blind. Guides walk the bank first and pick the line.

Location: Kaudiyala Upper • Strict Scout

2. Daniel's Dip

Grade III+

Daniel's Dip fools you. It looks tame, then the river drops suddenly into a deep trough. Standing waves pile up so big the front crew vanishes into freezing Himalayan spray.

Location: Below The Wall

3. Three Blind Mice

Grade III

Three Blind Mice gets its name from three wave trains running back to back at speed. Clear the third one and you need sharp, synchronized strokes or the raft spins sideways.

Location: Marine Drive Gorge

4. Cross Fire

Grade III

Cross Fire happens where opposing currents slam into narrow canyon walls. Lateral waves and whirlpools build up serious force.

Location: Byasi Upper

5. Roller Coaster

Grade III+

Roller Coaster throws waves reaching up to 6 feet tall. Great for surfing at speed and grabbing photos.

Location: Shivpuri Gorge

6. Golf Course

Grade III+

Golf Course drags you through a 9 hole run of boulder drops and foam. Your whole crew feels it by the end.

Location: Shivpuri Lower

Got Questions?

Kaudiyala Rafting FAQs

Clear answers to the most common questions regarding safety, swimming, difficulty, and gear.

Kaudiyala is the longest commercial whitewater stretch in Rishikesh, encompassing 13 named rapids spanning Class II to Class IV+. The upper 10 kilometers feature immense river volume, narrow gorges, and 'The Wall' rapid—a steep drop with recirculating waves requiring advanced paddle synchronization and guide expertise.

Yes. Basic to moderate swimming confidence is strongly recommended for the 36 KM Kaudiyala stretch. While USCG Type V life jackets guarantee flotation, the power of Grade IV+ whitewater requires participants to remain calm in moving water in the rare event of a raft flip. Non-swimmers are advised to choose the Marine Drive 26 KM or Shivpuri 16 KM stretches.

The strict minimum age mandated by the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board (UTDB) is 18 years. Participants must be free from chronic heart conditions, severe asthma, epilepsy, and spinal injuries. The recommended weight range is 40 kg to 100 kg.

The river expedition takes approximately 5.5 to 6.5 hours on the water. The total time including the 38 KM uphill road transfer to Kaudiyala, gear briefing, riverside lunch break, and return transfer is approximately 8 to 9 hours (07:30 AM reporting to 04:30 PM finish).

Safety is our number one priority. Our expedition leader scouts The Wall from the riverbank before running it. If the water volume presents elevated hazard levels, guests are safely portaged (walked along the scenic riverbank trail) while expert guides paddle the empty raft through the rapid, after which guests reboard for the remainder of the 36 KM journey.

Wear quick dry synthetics: board shorts, rash guard, nylon tee. Strap on water shoes or secure river sandals only, no flip flops. Pack a dry towel, warm dry clothes for after, waterproof sunscreen, any personal meds. Valuables, dry bags, and phones ride safe in our vehicle.
