Tapovan sits at the far end of town. Grab a prepaid taxi at the airport counter outside. Fares run roughly ₹1,200 to ₹1,800 based on which camp cluster you're headed to, so ask first and confirm before you hop in.
You'll find direct trains rolling in from Delhi on the Vande Bharat Express (22457/22458) and the Shatabdi Express (12017), which is honestly the easiest way to skip the road hassle. Step outside the main station exit and there's a small chaos waiting, but the good kind. Taxis line up on one side, shared Vikram auto rickshaws (24/7) honk from the other. Bargain a little, hop in, and you're moving.
Rishikesh runs a slick modern railway terminal that actually works the way you'd hope, with direct auto rickshaws and app cabs waiting outside for Tapovan, Shivpuri, and Mohan Chatti. No hassle, no walking far with your bag dragging behind you. Jump in, name your stop, done.

I've been driving up to Rishikesh four or five times now, and I'll tell you, the road signs lie. Half the landmarks people mention don't even exist anymore. The ones that do? Lifesavers when your phone loses signal near .
. Most travelers fly into Delhi, grab a taxi or bus, and end up on NH7 heading north. Six hours if you're lucky, nine if you hit the truck traffic near . The road climbs steadily once you pass, and that's where it gets interesting.
Zone one covers the riverside camps south of town, and getting there means taking the sharp left after the bridge. Don't miss it. The road narrows fast, and you'll be bouncing over potholes before you realize you passed it. The terrain flattens out into sandy stretches, perfect for pitching tents, but your sedan will scrape bottom if you don't watch the dips near the riverbank.
No kidding, the second zone around has the worst road of all four. Loose gravel, blind curves, and trucks coming downhill like they own the mountain. I learned this the hard way. Drive in daylight only, keep your horn ready, and expect 40 minutes of white knuckle turns after the viewpoint.
But zone three makes up for it. The approach through is wide, well paved, and you'll see the Ganges pop into view around kilometer 12. Pull over there. Seriously. The light at that bend hits the water like nothing else along the route. Camps here sit on flatter ground with actual tree cover, which matters when the afternoon sun hits.
Zone four takes you furthest north past, and it's where things get remote. Cell service dies around the checkpoint, so download your maps. The road turns to packed dirt after the last village, and you'll need ground clearance. I watched a hatchback get towed out of mud that looked solid. It wasn't.
Mind you, fuel stations thin out past . Fill up in Rishikesh proper or you'll be walking back to town with a jerry can. Not fun at 4,000 rupees per liter for emergency fuel from the village shops.
Look, nobody tells you. The distance from Delhi to Rishikesh runs about 240 km, and Google says five hours. That's a lie. Budget seven minimum, eight during monsoon. The bypass helps once you know the turnoff, and the new four lane stretch past shaved 30 minutes off my last trip.
One more thing. Parking at most camps costs extra, usually around 200 to 500 rupees per day, and they don't tell you until you're unloading. Ask before you commit. Trust me on that.
Found 16 km if you head upstream on the Badrinath National Highway, the road itself tagged NH 58. Luxury Swiss tents everywhere you look. Plunge pools cut into the hillside. Lawns so green and wide they swallow the river view whole. Ganges valley spread out below like a slow movie. Worth every rupee. Mind you, the real flex is the tents themselves, thick canvas, proper beds, en suite bathrooms that don't feel like a compromise. Cold mornings, hot showers, hot chai at your tent flap by request. By evening, the lawn turns into a soft gold, and you can hear the river before you see it.
Asia's highest 83m bungee, plus a giant swing and a 1km flying fox, all sit in this spot. The place drops you into a forested mountain valley, quiet except for the rush of water, and the Hyul river tributary runs right through it. Sacred ground, and it feels it.
Heval River runs shallow and clear here, cold enough to wake your feet up the second you step in. Families come for the cottages strung along the bank, and couples too. The water's safe for a quick dip, no surprises.
