Binsar: The Untamed Crown of Kumaon

Sprawling across 47 square kilometers on the Jhandi Dhar hills of Almora district, Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary (2,420m / 7,940 ft) is one of the most ecologically rich and tranquil nature sanctuaries in northern India.

From the 7th to 18th century, Binsar served as the fortified summer capital of the Chand Kings of Kumaon. Today, it is a protected haven of ancient Himalayan oak, cedar, pine, and scarlet rhododendron forests. The highlight of Binsar is Zero Point — an observation tower reached via a gentle 2km forest walk that reveals a breathtaking 300-kilometer unbroken panorama of Himalayan snow giants including Nanda Devi (7,816m), Trishul (7,120m), Chaukhamba, Kedarnath, and the Panchachuli peaks.
