The Mythological & Natural Wonder of Dodital
Hidden deep within the deodar and oak forests of the Asi Ganga river valley in Uttarkashi, Dodital (also known as Dhundital or the Lake of Ganesha) is one of the most serene and spiritually charged freshwater lakes in the Himalayas.
Formed by natural subterranean springs, the crystal-clear emerald waters of the lake reflect the towering peaks of the Bandarpoonch range and dense pine slopes. According to sacred Hindu mythology, this is the very hermitage where Goddess Parvati bathed and created Lord Ganesha to guard her abode. A quaint ancient stone temple dedicated to Lord Ganesha stands beside the tranquil shoreline, where pilgrims and trekkers offer prayers before attempting the high mountain pass.
Beyond its profound spiritual heritage, Dodital is an ecological sanctuary. The lake is the natural habitat of the rare and celebrated Himalayan Golden Trout and Brown Trout, easily spotted darting through the transparent waters. The surrounding pine and birch forests are a haven for birdwatchers, hosting Monal pheasants, Koklass pheasants, laughing thrushes, and migratory Himalayan eagles.
